CHL No. 172 Pioneer Oil Refinery - Los Angeles


NO. 172 PIONEER OIL REFINERY - In 1875 the Star Oil Company, one of the predecessors of the Standard Oil Company of California, drilled its first Pico Canyon well, which yielded about one hundred barrels per day. The discovery resulted in the erection of the first commercial oil refinery in California the following year.

The guidebook lists the address of the site as 283 Pine Street, Newhall. It is actually at 28302 Pine Street, Newhall. It looks like construction storage site. There is an old mail box with the address on it. Follow the dirt driveway/road east until you come upon the remains of the refinery.
